COLLEGE EXPENSE
This is the most important part of your budget. Though the average tuition fee per year is about Rs. 1, 37, 500, the final amount charged by the college can vary wildly from college to college.
The colleges also charge various other fees under these heads: admission fees, regulatory fees, development fee, trust fee and several others. These expense are sometimes overlooked and results in making a wrong budget as these expense can range from a few thousands to lakhs. Check Education loan section for eligibility. Some private colleges also seek and get donation for engineering seats, according to media reports. Expensive Colleges - These colleges are normally of the top rank in their respective fields. As more students want to get into these colleges, the more expensive they become. Mid-tier Colleges - Most of the Karnataka colleges fall under this category. They can be very affordable for outstation candidates. Budget Colleges - The remaining colleges fall under this category. But the students should be careful about taking admission in these colleges as low cost may be because they are relatively new and may lack proper infrastructure as compared to other colleges. The students also take care to see they have the proper approval. HOSTEL / BOARDING EXPENSESThe cost of living may vary according to the living standards of a student. Normally, hostel charges vary from Rs 2,500 to Rs 8,000 per month. If the student wants to stay as a paying guest the rates may go up to Rs 10,000 or more, food costs included. The students may also rent apartments and stay with a group of friends leading to lower expenses.
FOOD EXPENSESThe hostel charges normally cover food expenses, but if the students want to eat out, the expense can go up as restaurant charges a hefty premium. Account for at least Rs. 12,000 per year.
STUDY MATERIALSThe student can either buy them from college campus or may procure them from the book shops. There are quite a few good book shops in Bangalore offering both new and second-hand books.

TRAVEL EXPENSEThe main travel expense constitutes of visiting home during vacations. Depending upon location and frequency of travel, it can be upwards of Rs. 20,000 per year approx.
MISCELLANEOUS EXPENSEOther expenses like clothes, parties, local travel can constitute about Rs. 50,000 per year approx.
