SUpernumerary QUOTA (SNQ)

How to save on tuition fees

What is SNQ QUOTA?

SNQ or Supernumerary quota is introduced by AICTE to allow students from the economically weaker sections of the society to gain admission in engineering colleges across India for reduced tuition fees.

How much less will be the fees?

Well, for starters, the entire government fees is waived off for an eligible candidate and s/he only has to pay a token amount for other costs. Let me give you a comparison: If one gets selected in Acharya Institute of Technology through Comedk, s/he has to pay about Rs. 140,000 per year while a SNQ quota candidate pays only about Rs. 13,000. I can totally see your eyes brighten up! :)

WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR IT?

If you are a rank holder in any of the entrance examinations and your family income is less that Rs. 4.5 lakhs per year, you become automatically eligible for SNQ quota. Of course, the number of eligible candidate per candidate is limited to 5 percent of the total available seats.

Can you give an example?

Okay. Say, a college has 100 seats for Computer Science Engineering and at 5 percent of total seats, 5 students get eligible for SNQ. But, interestingly, those 5 seats are not deducted from the total seats, rather those 5 seats get added to the available seats. So, in our example, the number of seats become 105, after including the SNQ quota. Yay!

How are the seats allotted under this quota?

That's the best part. A computer software goes through the merit lists and ranks the eligible candidates for a SNQ seat. You don't have to choose any option to avail the quota if you meet other conditions.

How do I make sure I do not miss this?

The only thing you have to make sure is to produce an income certificate issued by a jurisdictional Tahasildar and submit it at the document verification stage of the examination.
